Extra Curricular, Visits & Enrichment

Instrumental and Vocal Tuition

We are able to offer a wide range of instrumental lessons at Fernhill and this tuition is provided by teachers on a weekly basis.  They deliver lessons during school hours and student times are rotated so that curriculum lessons are affected as little as possible.  If a student has a particular request about the timing of their lessons we will always try to accommodate this, just speak to Mrs Crowe who will do her best to ensure you are happy.

Please click on the Instrumental Lessons letter for more information.

The Instrumental Timetable is available to view outside M Block and in the foyer of B block.

Clubs

The Music Department has the following varied extra-curricular clubs on offer at lunchtimes:

Monday – Boomwackers

Tuesday – Ukulele Orchestra

Keyboard club – Wednesday

KS3 Voices – Friday

We also encourage students to use the practice rooms at lunchtimes or after school; please book in with Mrs Crowe or Mr Lankshear first.

All students are welcome to take part in the Christmas Concert, with auditions held in November, and the Music Department contributes to the Global Fair in July.

Visits

The Music Department has previously organised trips to see professional orchestras perform at the Anvil in Basingstoke and trips to musicals in London.  For some of our GCSE students it is the first opportunity to see Classical music being performed by a live orchestra and brings to life the music that they study during Years 10 and 11.  We alrady have in place plans for other exciting and enriching opportunities with a Year 7 trip organised to see the London production of The Lion King and Year 9 going to see Grease the Musical! in Woking.  We are also organising a smaller trip for Year 8 to see Hairspray.  The last year and a half has been a very challenging time for our young people and it will be great take them to the theatre as much as possible to celebrate music and the arts for a cultural experience.  Certainly the Music Department cannot wait to return to pre-Covid times and get singing again and see more live music!

We have taken students to the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and staff from the ACM are keen to further develop links with Fernhill, offering performance workshops on a future visit.

We also hope to visit a local old people’s home in the Autumn term to sing some festive carols and take cards or small gifts; music in the community is such a wonderful thing and the department would like to develop this in the future.
