Key Stage 4

Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. Geography is not only current and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. We follow the AQA course (8035) which provides students with the chance to get to grips with some of the big questions which affect our world and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world. It is very practical with opportunities to develop transferrable skills such as interpreting photographs, map skills, fieldwork skills and delivering presentations which are transferrable to other subjects and will be of benefit in the world of employment.

 Year 10 Curriculum Map

The first year of the GCSE course picks up on many of the themes explored at Key Stage 3. In the first term students study the following geographical themes:

The Challenge of Natural Hazards (earthquakes & volcanoes); and the Living World (rainforests and hot deserts). During the spring and summer term the course looks at physical landscapes in the UK, Rivers and Coasts. The year ends with an opportunity for fieldwork.

Year 11 Curriculum Map

In their final year students follow units which are mostly linked to human geography. They start by looking at cities of the world (Lagos & London) and consider the opportunities and challenges that life in each of these cities brings. Following on from this, students explore the themes of Resource Management and the Changing Economic World.

There are three GCSE exam papers; Paper 1 (Physical geography); Paper 2 Human geography and Paper 3 Fieldwork.
