Key Stage 4

 Year 10 GCSE Curriculum Map

Key Stage 4 – Core PE

At KS4 students are taught 2 hours of Physical Education a fortnight, building on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education.  As well as focusing on enjoyment and improving fitness, we hope to encourage continued participation after leaving school.

KS4 students are given ‘options’ to choose from, giving the students independence for their own learning.

We like the students to have as much of an input as possible with structuring their own curriculum, by giving the students options to choose from, with the view to keeping the students focused and interested.

We have great facilities at Fernhill, a large Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Tennis / Netball Courts, large playing fields and a Fitness Room.

GCSE PE

For those wishing to opt for a qualification in PE, we offer GCSE PE (AQA). Students receive 6 lessons a fortnight for this course (in addition to core PE). These are split into theory and practical lessons, usually with 4 lessons taught in a classroom and 2 practical lessons, due to the weighting of practical and theory marks awarded within the course.

Theory (60%)
Within theory lessons there are a number of topic areas which are covered in preparation for a theory exam at the end of the 2 year course, in the format of two written exam papers, lasting 1 hour 15 minutes each.

Theory topic areas: Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Analysis, Physical Training, Sports Psychology, Socio-cultural Influences, Health Fitness and Well-being and the use of data.

Within the lessons, the students will be taught the specific course content across the 6 units. But more importantly, how to apply that knowledge to sporting examples and real life situation. This is the most vital part of the course, as this is how the students will pick up the higher marks in the exams.

Practical (30%)
The practical lessons focus on refining and improving skills, knowledge and understanding in a variety of different sporting activities. Finally we assess the students in 3 activities; one of which is an Individual Activity, one that is a Team Activity and finally the third being an Individual or Team Activity.

For those students that participate in a sport outside of school, but we are unlikely to cover the sport in school (Skiing, Squash, Boxing), they can still be assessed in that sport if it is on the AQA specification.

Coursework (10%)
Written piece of Coursework: Analysis and Evaluation. This is where the student selects an activity that they compete in and analyse their performance, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Then put together a plan of how they would develop and improve their weaknesses.

Demonstrating their ability to analyse their own performance as well as being able to draw on some of the subject knowledge they have been taught, to apply that to a real life situation of trying to improve their own performance.

We hope that all students leave school with an interest in some form of physical activity.

For those that have a real keen interest and would like to further their education in sport and exercise, there many different courses offered by our local and neighbouring colleges ranging from Sports Science, Coaching and Sports Development.
