GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

In the first year of this 2 year course students will build on knowledge acquired at key stage 3. Students will take an in depth look at food commodities; Meat, fish, poultry, shellfish, dairy products, eggs and cereals. They will look at where these commodities come from and why they are important in the diet.

Students will study the nutritional needs for different groups, pregnant women, the young, the elderly, athletes and the sick. Students will study different diets an what effects food choices with the theory backed up with 3 practical lessons per fortnight 

GCSE Design & Technology

In Year students create outcomes based on their own ideas choosing from a variety of different materials whilst completing the relevant theory for each part of their project. Students are provided with a series of Non Examination Assessment (NEA) Challenges from which they pick their favourite to specialise into year 11.

Students are encouraged to follow the GCSE Resistant Materials process of finding relevant research for their ideas, designing innovative, interesting and aesthetically pleasing ideas. Students will make their design using precise techniques and evaluating and reflecting on their projects. During Year 10 students have 6 lessons per fortnight with full access to the practical workshop and computers for their written work.

BTEC Level 2 Vehicle Technology

Students in year 10 will study brakes and engines with a blend of both theory and practical. Both these modules are assessed by assignments.

BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care

Year 10 students choosing to study Health and Social will cover physical growth and development, PIES (physical, intellectual, emotional, social) and the six life stages in their first year. They are assessed throughout the year through theory and practical assignments.

GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

In their GCSE second year 2 pieces of coursework are completed one on food science and one on food preparation these 2 pieces of work are worth 50% of the students final grade. On completion of these including a three hour cookery practical the focus is all about examination preparation and revisiting the key areas of food and nutrition.

BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care

The second year of the HSC course will look at the factors affecting health and well being, interpreting health indicators, person centred health and well-being improvement plans, the types of health care service available and meeting the needs of the care service user. As in Year 11 these are assessed by assignments but with one module assessed by exam.

Students will visit local care homes and pre schools.

BTEC Level 2 Vehicle Technology

In year 11 they progress to service of vehicles, engineering skills and setup and systems. These are also assessed by assignments in both theory and practical. The vehicle tech programme is all assignment based without exams therefore  it is very attractive option to take at key stage 4.

GCSE Design & Technology

In year 11 students will put their design skills into practise and produce a portfolio of design work based on their chosen concept. Their final outcome that shows the design process in full alongside their technical workshop skills. The portfolio and final outcome will be completed throughout Year 11 and makes up half their overall grade.

If students options choices reflect their intended career pathways Fernhill has excellent contacts at both Farnborough and Basingstoke Colleges of Technology.

Guest speakers will come to Fernhill to talk to students about careers in Health and Social Care, Hospitality and Catering , Vehicle Technology and Construction from Level 1 to Level 3 full time courses and apprenticeships.
